Our Place in the Wild
The Herd Nature Reserve represents more than important habitat and species protection—it embodies strategic conservation science applied at landscape scale.
Its position within the Vhembe Biosphere Reserve Limpopo Riverine Conservation Corridor and connection to major transfrontier conservation areas demonstrates how targeted protection of key habitat nodes can achieve conservation impact far exceeding site boundaries. The reserve proves that effective conservation requires thinking beyond individual protected areas to embrace ecosystem-scale planning and transboundary collaboration.
In an era of accelerating ecosystem fragmentation and biodiversity loss, The Herd Reserve offers a practical model for conservation success—protecting irreplaceable ecosystems while contributing to broader landscape connectivity that is allowing Africa’s wildlife populations to reclaim their historic ranges in the Limpopo River Valley.
Part of A Bigger Story, The Herd Reserve is situated in one of southern Africa’s most strategic conservation locations in the UNESCO Vhembe Biosphere Reserve on the Limpopo River, midway between South Africa’s Kruger National Park and Mupungubwe National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site Cultural Landscape.
The Herd Reserve is a partnership between private landowners and the provincial protected areas authorities, demonstrating how collaborative conservation can achieve landscape-scale impact.
The Herd Reserve NPC is a Non-Profit Company registered in the Republic of South Africa, Registration No. 2022/298747/08, certified by the Department of Social Services as a Non-Profit Organisation, Certificate No.288-133NPO, supported by the registered 501(c)(3) charity, Friends of the Herd Reserve Inc. in the United States of America, EIN 39-2361057
The Herd Reserve NPC is the designated Management Authority of The Herd Nature Reserve, a declared nature reserve under the National Environmental Management Act: Protected Areas Act, No. 57 of 2003.
